Black Friday

Black Friday at Koi Hacienda

Black Friday – as many commercial events – was born in USA to incentive shopping. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.

It is celebrated the day after Thanksgiving and the “black” refers to traffic jams on that day to return home after celebrating the previous day with the family.

When the Black Friday earned fame, the “black” was attributed to the business figures – which passed from red to black thanks to sales held that day.

Koi Hacienda celebrates Black Friday and offers THIS DAY ONLY – which this year falls on November 27 – 20% discount on all products and 40% in koi fishes (except koi 3 years and older) in the physical store in Manilva.

Psssst … do not worry … those who can not visit us, will get their chance Cyber Monday !!!

Black Friday

Koi Hacienda: Black Friday – ONLY THIS DAY – 20% on all products in the shop in Manilva (Málaga)

Sick koi – quick answers

My koi is sick – what should I do? One who has a sick koi is concerned about the pet (or – if less emotional – the value that is in danger). The aim of this person is, to remedy as soon as possible.

Sick koi – quick answers

That would be best.

Perhaps we are accustomed to quick answers because today we can not afford to take our time for curing because I lose my job because my friends go out with other friends and I am going to lose the party of my life …

Headache – quick answer !?

There is not.

Because there are multiple reasons for the headache (because I have been attacked and they knocked me out, because I have a hang over, because I have not had a drop of water throughout the whole day, because I worked non-stop listening for 8 hours to customer complaints …).

And for every situation there is a different remedy …

Sick koi – quick answers … you will not find them.

At least not in / with Koi Hacienda.

Koi Hacienda cares about the circumstances.

Even so, we risk that certain people don’t like us.

For the simple fact, that we don’t give a quick answer.

If you contact us for a sick koi, we will need to know:

  • pond size (volume, depth, location)
  • Since when you have the pond?
  • pond population (how many koi, what size, other animals, plants)
  • water parameters (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, temperature, water public network, well water)
  • filtration system / aeration
  • Have you introduced recently (in the last 4 weeks) new koi / new fish?
  • Have you introduced recently (in the last 4 weeks) new plants or made changes?
  • Have you done lately (in the last 4 weeks) some work / construction around the pond?
  • Have you treated lately (in the last 4 weeks) plants around the pond? And your neighbor?
  • What exactly happens to the sick koi (swims on the side,  has wound, jumps …)?
  • photo / video of sick koi (you can send it via whatsapp to +34 626 75 25 65)

After receiving this information, we will endeavor to help to cure your koi.

However, I have to point out that we are not vets so Law restricts our range of services.

This is a blog – open to debate – your comments are welcome.

Registered zoological entity

Registered zoological entity – my personal translation of “núcleo zoológico” a legal document required in Spain. We thought it was understood. We took for granted that any activity that sells animals has its paperwork in order and legalized. But over time that Koi Hacienda has been in business, we’re becoming aware that there are much clandestine “agent” selling koi, who is neither registered as self employed nor have official licenses such as the “registered zoological entity”.

Registered zoological entity – what does that mean ?

Several regulations of the European Parliament, National Laws and Autonomous Regulations are the base of this concept.

The idea is to ensure hygienic and sanitary standards for the health and needs of the animal.

The registered zoological entity concept should be applied to:

  • animals of competition, racing and betting
  • facilities or centers for pets
  • companies selling animals
  • breeders

And there are special provisions for establishments that sell exotic pets.

This is just a brief information so you can get an idea of what “núcleo zoológico” means when you read it somewhere. Those who want to go deeper into the topic and have enough knowledge of the Spanish language, can study the links above.

Koi Hacienda was awarded by the Junta de Andalucía with the number EN 290 680 000 036

Japanese koi … Why koi from Japan?

Japanese Koi … why koi from Japan ?

And why they are more expensive?

These and many other questions we hear very often in Koi Hacienda but also in conversations with people who do not have their own koi but they have understood that this type of fish is worth a fortune.

Obviously the press is much more interested in writing a story about a fish that can cost as much as a small car instead of writing about a goldfish of a few euros.

Believing in Japanese koi has its reasons. And these reasons are not prestigious, but based on rational and proven arguments.

A somewhat provocative question: Can you think of buying a pata negra ham from Canada?

Strikes you this question?

Why ?

Oaks and pigs also exist in Canada …

If you’ve been intrigued, I invite you to read the full article in our Academy

Also question why the more expensive Japanese koi is explained in detail in the article in the Academy.

This blog is a place to exchange ideas and opinions.

Thank you for sharing your comments with us and other fans koi.

Saki Hikari – high quality koi food

Saki Hikari – at last we got it !

Saki Hikari a high quality koi food – used by major Japanese breeders and owners who want the best for their koi.

The company states that its flagship product is due to the combination of many years of experience and research, high quality ingredients, impressive technology and strict control on the production process.

We offer the full range:

  • Saki Hikari Balance (daily use), for further information click here.
  • Saki Hikari Multi Season (low temperature), for further information click here.
  • Saki Hikari Color Enhancing (improving colors), for further information click here.
  • Saki Hikari Growth (accelerates growth), for further information click here.
  • Saki Hikari Pure White (to improve the white), for further information click here.
  • Saki Hikari Deep Red (to improve the red), for further information click here.

But it is not just “fame” … the company efficiently demonstrates the qualities. In fact, Saki Hikari is the food for the Grand Champions “All Japan Nishikigoi Show” (= the most important in the world) over the last seven (!!!) years.

It is very interesting to see what kind of food they give their promising koi and when:

Saki Hikari

Koi Hacienda: Saki Hikari feeding planning for champion koi

  • 6 months before the Show: Saki Hikari Balance, Color Enhancing, Growth o Multi Season
  • 4 months before the Show: Saki Hikari Deep Red con Balance y / o Growth
  • 2 months before the Show: Saki Hikari Deep Red con Color Enhancing
  • 2-4 weeks before the Show: Saki Hikari Deep White

The most significant issue is the so called “Hikari Germ”:

Hikari Germ

Koi Hacienda: Advantages of the Hikari Germ

“Hikari Germ” is a strain of Bacillus bacteria that once provided, proliferates itself into the intestine koi. Improves intestinal flora and thus helps the digestion of food. Thus there are several important advantages:

a) the digestion process is easier so the koi has more energy

b) the food is better absorbed and so the important ingredients can actually reach the body

c) the better the food is absorbed, the less waste is left in the water, less work for the filter, improved water quality, better health for koi

The experiment lasted 18 days during which 30 koi of less than a year received an amount of food equivalent to 2% of its own weight.

Also with regard to the growth of koi, studies have been made with very significant results:

Saki Hikari Growth

Saki Hikari: Excellent food to accelerate growth

Since they have done so pretty and very visual, I leave here the link of Saki Hikari with basic instructions to give food.

The important note is at the end of the article: No overfeeding. Better less than too much.  And – from a water temperature of 5 ° C – Do not feed. NOTHING. (In more temperate zones, you can apply this rule also between 9 ° C and 12 ° C).

To close the chapter: Our enthusiasm concerning finally gotten Hikari products … Those who have used themselves Hikari products probably experienced the difficulty of receiving them regularly. There is only one company in Spain that has the right to import Hikari (BCN Tropicalfish). With them we are in contact for years. We already received Hikari Staples and Hikari Gold, but Saki Hikari was rejected. The container was not accepted.

So we had to do a big detour to import this product through France … it is now available in our online shop.

Those who have subscribed to our newsletter will receive a discount of 15% in 15 kg bags of Saki Hikari until stocks are finished.

Koi Hacienda about Koi Hacienda

No.

This title is not a bad translation.

I did it on purpose. According to the motto of Conde Zedtwitz “Do good and talk about it.”

But – honestly – it is hard.

It is hard to write good things about yourself. Because it is immediately and automatically associated with “arrogant”, “conceited” and “stuck up”.

On the other hand … it’s really depressing to see that it is so much easier to describe our flaws and point out what we can not.

So … I try balancing on a tightrope: speak well of us without praise, but based on data and facts.

Koi Hacienda

Koi Hacienda – selecting koi in Japan, February 2015

Each year, the number of imported koi by Koi Hacienda is higher. Thanks to you, we are able to buy more koi and with this we are able to reduce the fixed costs of import, which result in cheaper sales prices.

With our new website we have achieved greater presence on the Internet. If you Google “koi online Spain” or “koi Marbella” – Koi Hacienda is in first place.

Next year, Koi Hacienda will be 10 years.

10 years of existence.

10 years experience in Spain (and over 20 years experience in the world of koi in general).

10 years selecting the best koi in Japan for you.

We are already preparing surprises and gifts for this special year.

Koi Hacienda

Koi Hacienda: 2006 – 2016

All the above are only steps to reach our main goal: promoting Japanese koi in Spain.

Promoting for us does not only mean that people who have never heard or seen a koi, known now that it is a colorful carp.

Promoting for Koi Hacienda means above all sharing knowledge.

Explaining  why a “big puddle” is not a suitable habitat for koi and what you should do to enjoy from the beginning for healthy and well growing koi (instead of having water problems, algae, sick fish, being fed up with cleaning filters etc.)

We would like to help understand the difference between a cheap koi from the garden centre and original from Japan.

In the near future, I will write a more extensive article about “Koi from Japan – Why them and not XY”.

Butterfly Koi – Koi long fin – American Koi

Butterfly koi – koi with long fins or American koi – are NOT, as many people believe, a cross between koi and goldfish.

However, you can read many stories about the origin of this type of koi.

Koi Hacienda butterfly koi

Butterfly Koi: one of the farms of Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery

The Americans claim to be the creators of this new variety. Wyatt LeFever from Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery in the state of North Carolina in the US was launched in the early 90s to this adventure.

Nothing but the beginning of his business is already a real adventure – reflecting the typical American pioneer spirit (to read the article, click here).

Always searching for new products, one day LeFever discovered in a pet magazine an advertisement of a company offering koi with long fins. When they arrived, he and his team took a big disappointment: These were no koi. Not at all. They looked like wild carp with grey and brown colors but – yes – with long fins.

Later they found out, that these fish came from a wild carp population that lived in the ditches and canals of Indonesia. Nobody seems to know the origin of these fish, their exact species or how they acquired the long fins and tails.

These fish were not beautiful and not considered commercially important, but the team of Blue Ridge decided to let them reach sexual maturity and put them in a natural pond (mud pond) for 2 years.

After this time they had grown and gained considerable weight. But they were still “ugly”.

Here the idea of crossing them with some beautiful koi had emerged and so the experiment started: 2 female with long fins with 2 male koi variety ogon (=metalic) in a pool of 8,000 square meters surface.

The tension was big. What would happen? Would they be breeding? How would it be ?

Spawning was very rich and the growth very rapid. Bur when they could distinguish juveniles, the disappointment was great: Almost every fish had the same “ugly” color as the wild carp.

At first they thought of emptying the entire pond. However, they decided to let them grow until the end of the season.

And thank goodness they made this decision.

Koi Hacienda

Butterfly Koi: Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery

As they got bigger, some very interesting fish began to appear in the mix. A certain percentage of them had long fins, with a luminous metallic glow, which could be described as “pearled”.

When Randy LeFever (now the co-owner and president of Blue Ridge) saw them, he exclaimed: “They remind me of butterflies”. With THIS, a name and a new product was born.

From this moment on, the colors were developed, some crosses were made, it was confirmed that these “hybrid” would not be sterile etc.

During this discovery of butterfly koi, it seamed that in Japan also some breeders started breeding butterfly koi.

Who was the first to develop ???

I dare to launch the theory that maybe the Japanese have launched the experiment before the Americans. But definitely Americans were the first ones in doing advertising and marketing them.

Koi Hacienda

Butterfly Koi Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery

Also, keep in mind that butterfly koi breeding in Japan is still not 100% “good view”.

The AIRINKAI –  THE Koi Association which amongst others deals with monitoring and sanctioning koi competitions – does not accept butterfly koi in competitions. Their reasons are:

  • Body Shape: The shape of the koi body is one of the most important elements when assessing koi. While a koi should have an oval / round body, butterfly koi have rather a thin body.
  • fin-body ratio: the ratio of fins compared to the body is important in competitions but can not be applied in the same way to butterfly koi.
  • pattern: butterfly koi are still very young and patterns are not yet as well developed as the “normal” koi who have more years of experience, breeding and improvement.

In many countries, butterfly koi are still excluded from competitions. But in America, the AKCA introduced new criteria, so butterfly koi could also participate in competitions.

That’s probably why, butterfly koi have the nickname “American koi” since these fishes receives the highest appreciation in this country.

When Koi Hacienda travels to Japan every year to choose the koi, always we try to buy a box of butterfly koi to satisfy the different tastes of lovers of koi.

Koi stress – The story of Victor

In order to make you aware of what is really stress for a koi, I would like to tell you the story of Victor.

This is Victor:

Koi Hacienda

Tosai Tancho Sanke, called Víctor

It is one of the Tosai, which we selected one by one in Japan – at Hasegawa.

The 11th of February he went with other 99 “friends” into a smaller pond (= koi stress nº 1).

Koi Hacienda

Thierry at Hasegawa

Koi Hacienda

Selecting one by one

Probably the same day, they started to fast (= koi stress nº2) as they planned to ship soon.

Due to logistic and paper work, they arrived only the 12th of March (= koi stress nº 3, fasting longer than foreseen).

Niigata – the origin of koi – is 650km far away from Tokio. So, the koi are fished, put in plastic bags, then in boxes until the lorry pases to pick them up and brings them to Tokio airport (koi stress nº 4, 5 and 6).

Once at the airport, they have to be carried until the plane (koi stress nº 7) and then travel all the way from Japan to Europe (in our case, Frankfurt) … koi stress nº 8.

At the airport they have to pass the European Health Inspection (koi stress nº9) before they can continue their travel to Madrid.

Koi Hacienda

Niigata – Tokio

Koi Hacienda

Tokio – Madrid

At Madrid airport we wait for them … impatiently. They use to arrive around midday, but it takes very long until the are in the cargo pick up area (= koi stress nº10).

The closer we come to 2 pm, the more difficult it gets, as all employee is leaving for lunch. They might work by shifts somewhere, but not there, so there is no 24h service.

Usually we get them around 5 pm (= koi stress nº 11) and then we drive as fast as we can (please, don’t talk about speed controls !!!) to Manilva (a small village approx. 30 km from Marbella).

This is not only stress for the koi (nº 12) but as well for us. It is a race against the clock and a big responsibility as we have the complete harvest for the whole year in the car !!!

When we arrive, the koi have to adapt to the light (even if we switch on very few lights and never direct light), other temperature (even if we try to adapt them already in the car) and other water parameters (= koi stress nº13).

Koi Hacienda

Carefully unpacking koi

Koi Hacienda

Receiving koi at Koi Hacienda

Carefully we open the boxes, so that the koi can get used step by step to the light. Then the plastic bags are put onto pond water, which we have put in the (blue) bowls, so that they can adapt to the water temperature. After a certain while we open the plastic bags and let pond water into the sacs until we let the whole lot swimming in the bowl (out of the plastic bag).

And here the story of Victor starts: He staid in the blue bowel, because he did not survive the trip.

We were taking care of the remaining other koi and then we cleaned up the boxes and plastic bags and wanted to go home (in the meantime it was 1h30 in the night !!!). When I came to the bowl, where Victor was in, I have had the impression, that I saw him moving … I took him out of the dark, closer to the light and saw, that he was opening his mouth !!!

I put him into the pond with his 99 “friends” and crossed fingers, that he would survive the first night.

As you can imagine – the first pond I went to the next morning was Victors pond.

And there he was ! Swimming with his friends !

I have given him the name Victor (perhaps it is a Victoria ?), as I consider his survival as a real victory !

Koi Hacienda

Search Victor ! He is still very small, compared with his friends …
